Review: DMC Stitchable Mesh and Pattern giveaway

Hello all! Today I am reviewing the new DMC Stitchable Mesh - and for all of you who follow me on Instagram, this post comes as no surprise, as you already saw "sneak peeks" of my thoughts and progress while working with it. Thank you, first of all, to DMC for sending me the stitchable mesh to work with - it was a treat!

The stitchable mesh is thin enough to put in a regular embroidery hoop - I fit all of mine in an 8 inch hoop. The mesh is very sheer (as you see above), and has two sides - one with a silver-white finish, and one with a gold finish. I chose the gold finish for my project - and it has a very nice sheen.

The edges of the mesh, once cut, unravel very quickly. One of the most important parts of your project, when working with this fabric, will be to secure the edges. If I had it to do again, I would do a quick running stitch around the edges. The raw edges feel like tulle, and are scratchy on the hands, so you may also want to line them with bias tape, if possible.

I initially tried tracing my design using a fine-tipped black marker - don't repeat my mistake. :) Instead, try a permanent ink marker, or you will literally have a bit of a mess on your hands. :)

Detail

Also, be aware as you stitch that the luster is quite fragile - if you pick out your stitches, you'll be able to see where exactly you did that. Squint at the photo above and you'll see where I picked out my stitches. There's a ghostly line, where the gold luster was removed from unpicking.

removed from hoop

Another thing to consider as you stitch is that once you remove your fabric from the hoop, it will be stretched and bent - as above. So I'd suggest leaving your project in the hoop, or avoiding a hoop, if you don't want this issue.

In progress

As I mentioned before, the mesh is very transparent, and will reveal whatever is behind it. I think this is a plus, though - as it gives you an extra dimension to play with in your stitching!

Taupe fabric background

By layering a taupe fabric underneath, I achieved a really lovely 3-D effect, which made it look like the stitches were floating on top of the fabric:

Cool, huh? Now, onto my experiences with stitching on the mesh...

flower detail

I really enjoyed stitching on this fabric! I won't lie, I was intimidated when I saw it, but once I pulled the needle through, I found that it stitched the same as your average Aida cloth. For some reason, I actually found it easier to stitch French knots on this surface. But I used all of the same stitches I normally use - split, chain, knots, woven wheel, and couching, and I never had any issue - see above for a sampling.

Here's another closeup of that nice mesh surface.

Here is my finished project - a lovely wedding hoop:

Overall, I found this new stitchable mesh very enjoyable. If you keep in mind the caveats I listed above, and plan your project carefully, I'm sure you can achieve some really lovely and unique results with this fabric. Thank you again to DMC for sending this to me, to try!

Jessica Taylor Made - Interview and Giveaway!

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Jessica from Jessica Taylor Made Her bold, geometric tapestry kits look like a joy to stitch. Read on to learn more about Jessica and stay tuned to the end of this post for a special giveaway of one of Jessica's kits!

Pink Diamond canvas by Jessica Taylor

What inspired you to do tapestry?

It is not what inspired me but rather who... my Grandmother bought my first tapestry kit at the age of 7 and taught me how to stitch, we used to sit together for hours on end stitching. I looked up to her talent and loved her enormous sofa covered with her beautiful cushion creations. As I grew with confidence I would pick up her more complicated tapestry and complete a section, later being proud that it was a joint effort. Over the years I have tried embroidery, cross stitch and long stitch but always come back to my real passion, tapestry.

Jessica Taylorgrandmother

Can you recall your first tapestry piece?

My first kit was a small swan design and I was so delighted when I completed it and my Grandmother helped me to finish it and put in a frame. I only wish I still had it or could find the original kit to buy again so I can teach my daughter when she is old enough.

Jessica and Elodie

Why did you start designing your own kits?

I became a mother to a gorgeous, squidgy daughter recently and it seemed like the best time to set up something for myself which I really enjoy doing and will always have time for. The main aim of JessicaTaylorMade was to design modern and appealing creations for the more discerning. I could not find kit designs on the market to satisfy my passion and was bored of the dull floral or animal tapestries available. I am fed up of stitching numerous kits and not wanting to display them or even give them to friends and family as gifts!

Two Stars pillows

What influences your designs?

I am quite addicted to using shapes and lines to create pattern. I like order and combining simple shapes to create an overall beautiful form. I have been influenced by numerous trips to Morocco and Turkey where there are such beautiful patterns everywhere: pavements, columns, mosques and palaces. I have taken inspiration from these and simplified them to create my tapestry designs. I am strongly attracted to bright colours which is part of my heritage, being half Nigerian and having my Grandmother's influence. She would wear traditional, brightly coloured Nigerian dress everyday despite the cold British weather.

Do you exhibit your work, have a shop, or sell your work in any way?

I launched my website (http://www.jessicataylormade.co.uk/) as my main point of sale in April this year, after just having my Facebook page and doing bespoke commissions for people who contacted. I built the website myself from scratch which I am pleased with as being technical with computers in not my strength. I have attended many markets, mainly in London and now more locally to Marlborough where I live.

Coral Sun kit

Do you do your work in a studio or special place? Do you think your surroundings are important to your process?

I have a few places I love to stitch, mainly somewhere snuggly and warm with good light. I do think tapestry stitching is quite seasonal and I find I do a lot more in the winter months curled up on my leather chair with a glass of wine. Or on a leather chair at my local pub with a roaring fire. Stitching on holiday in the sunshine al fresco is often just as relaxing if not more so than getting into a good book. Your surroundings are important, it needs to be peaceful with few distractions, a place where you can switch off and give stitching 90% of your attention, the other 10% on the TV, your husband or glass of wine.

stitching on canvas

What do you think is the best way to learn tapestry?

I would say just start, don’t choose a kit that is too complicated and select one with a coloured canvas to give you more of a guide. I know people who were terrified because the canvas is large, but stitching is supposed to be a slow progressive hobby and so it may take months to finish. But the sense of pride and achievement once it is completed is amazing. The feeling when someone comes to your home and asks where you bought your cushions and you say actually I made it, is like no other.

I have designed my kits to be simple to stitch and can be ideal for complete beginners with few colours and simple shapes, all straight lines! I include in depth instructions which you can take step by step and as long as you start in the middle and work your way out the outcome will be lovely I’m sure! Think of it as an adult paint by numbers combined with dot to dot and be brave! I am always happy to help at the other end of the phone or email if you get stuck!

I didn't want to let April go by without pointing out that our beloved Flickr Embroidery group turns 10 years old this month! Feel free to click through all 99,372 photos uploaded over the years for a trip down memory lane.

Many things have changed over the years, but one thing that has not is our common love of embroidery, fascination with all things thread and textile-related, and our celebration of color, friendship, uniqueness and camaraderie.

Cherry Blossoms
A photo from more recent times. :)

I was tickled to see a connection in the first photo that was ever uploaded to our group, and a lovely photo added to the pool this week (above) - we've begun and ended 10 years with cherry blossoms! Surely a sign of good luck and blessings.

To celebrate our momentous 10 years as a group, I'd like to do a very special giveaway.

Stitched Gifts Review and Giveaway!

Today I have the honor of sharing with you the lovely new book by Jessica Marquez, Stitched Gifts: 25 Sweet and Simple Embroidery Projects for Every Occasion. Jessica was kind enough to send us a copy of the book to review, along with another wonderful goodie that I'll reveal to you later in this post!

I'd like to take you on a tour of this wonderful book, so you can get better acquainted with it - so here's a few snapshots and a brief walkthrough for you...

From start to finish, this is a beautiful book, and has all of Jessica's signature style and inspiring photography. Jessica's eye for detail and flawless stitching are fully evident throughout this book. It's a great book for any level of stitcher - there so many unique projects that are simple and also beautiful, and I would definitely recommend it.

The book starts with a wonderful Tools & Materials section, that lays out in visual detail, all the elements of your craft as embroiderer:

Lucky winners of Embroidery supplies with Portuguese Soul

Lucky winners of Embroidery supplies with Portuguese Soul

OlĆ”! Passing by to announce the winners of last week's giveaway.

I'm very happy to inform Crystal Prior that she will receive a pack of Portuguese embroidery supplies with pure linen, a box of "vibrant" (her words...) pearl cotton balls from Limol and two Portuguese patterns. And I look forward to see how she will use them on her wool felt embroidery...

I believe that receiving a box of pearl cotton balls inspired by Guimarães embroidery will remind Deb H of Portugal. She was the lucky winner!!

And I was so happy with her comment... Knowing that Deb already visited Portugal was very special to me. She stayed in Ericeira, a little town near the sea, very well known among surfers... I have to quote her words: "Oh, how I loved that little town and it's people. Every morning, I would take a walk and talk to shopkeepers and residents. How lovely it was. I long to go back."

Pastel colors,  another choice from agulha nĆ£o pca - not so traditional but still beautiful
Both winners gave the correct answer about the Portuguese traditional embroideries that inspired my color choices for the pearl cotton boxes... Guimarães embroidery has precise definitions on the colors that should be used in order to preserve the tradition: red, blue, gray, black, white and ecru. And these are the colors in the box that Deb H will receive.

Love or fiancƩ' embroidered handkerchiefs were the inspiration to the color choice of the pack won by Crystal. Although they do not have a rigid color palette and many colors can be used, primary colors predominate.

But Crystal and Deb were not the only winners... I was so surprised with all your kind comments, that I'm feeling like a real winner...

I loved to know that you think these pearl cotton balls look divine and have a pretty shine, that these collections are amazing and great color combinations that make you smile, that the traditional Portuguese embroideries inspired the work for an art lesson, that some of you recognize similarities between regional Portuguese embroidery and the stitching traditions of your country, that you've been learning and feeling inspired by my posts and look forward to reading more. And, of course... I was even happier to know that some of you have already visited Portugal and others will do it soon (contact me if you need some help...)

Heavy weight Portuguese linen

I loved your care... And how you took your time not only to apply for the giveaway but also to leave some kind words about my new products an my work...

You made me feel like a winner... Thank you so much - Muito obrigada!

Giveaway Winner!

We have a winner in last week's Laying Tool giveaway! But first, I was excited to read all of your faves - I love how we enjoy a rainbow of colors - I suppose it's fitting: we are crafters. :)

But of course I couldn't resist tallying up the responses and seeing if there were any crowd favorites. I came up with a Top 5:

From the left, your faves were: Northern Lights (8), Blue Green Ocean (6), Cocobolo Wood (5), Persian Blue (5) and Abalone (5).

And now for our random winner:

Pat Upton
I love the blue & yellow swirl! A favorite combo!

Congratulations, Pat - thanks to the generous folks at JR Crafter, you'll be receiving the Best Laying Tool of your choice. And thanks again to JR Crafter for sending a tool to review - if you'd like to check them out, here's a link to their Etsy Store and their website.

Hapy Stitching, all!

Winners!

I apologize that we neglected to announce last week's winner!

Our random winner of Aimee Ray's Doodle Stitching is:

Cindy G
I love Aimee's work! I've been wanting to learn Sashiko, and I bet she has a fun project to make it a little less intimidating.

Aimee Ray Babushka

Scandinavian Stitches Giveaway
We have a winner of these gorgeous threads contributed by Lynda of Scandinavian Stitches! (By the way, if you would like some interesting reading on Danish Flower Thread, I recommend this post on Mary Corbet's Needle n Thread.)

I had a great time reading through each and every one of your awesome comments - what a great stitching circle we could make! I love just how many of you would choose to stitch with your mothers and grandmothers - including those that have passed on, are ill, and those that are a great distance away. So, everyone's mother, grandmother, sister, and ancestors are invited!

I particularly loved the following stitching partners:
Royal School of Needlework
Miss Marple
Betsy Ross
Louisa May Alcott
Jane Austen
Rosey Grier
Albus Dumbledore
Dame Judi Dench
Jenny Hart / Jillian Tamaki / Erica Wilson / Mary Corbett
A round table stitch-athon with Jenny Adin-Christie, May Morris, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and my Granny
Martha Washington
Elinor Dashwood
Mary Queen of Scots or Anne Boleyn
Elizabeth Fry
Queen Elizabeth

So, they're invited, too! But, my hands-down favorite had to be Albus Dumbledore, so here is our winner:

Shakibing
I'd love to stitch with Albus Dumbledore.. after all if he loves knitting patterns, he might as well love embroidery

Genius! A man who enjoys knitting would make an admirable stitching companion, I agree. This was awesomely fun - thanks everyone for contributing! And thank you, Lynda for sponsoring such a nice prize. Remember you're invited to visit Lynda's home show April 19-21 in Stamford, Connecticut - read the original post for RSVP details.

And you might want to check in later this week for information on another upcoming giveaway!
